PERCY A. SANBORN (American, 1849-1929) PORTRAIT OF THE SHIP “C.B. HAZELTINE”. Fine oil on canvas portrait of a three-mast black hulled ship sailing left to right into a busy harbor. A large sailing vessel is seen off stern and the busy harbor with ships and steamers off bow. The ship shown in full sail flying U.S. flag and identifying smaller flags. A number of figures are seen on deck. All under a blue and white cloud sky. The ships name emblazoned on the back side. A hand written painted legend at center below the ship reads “Ship CB Hazeltine; Welcome Gilkey, Searsport, Master. Built at Belfast, ME. 1859”. Signed bottom right “Percy Sanborn” in script. The ship built in Belfast, Maine by C.P. Carter & Co., 1859. Welcome Gilkey Master 1859-1978. Original owners were Andrew J. Ross, Welcome Gilkey, Enoch Barnard and others. Housed in its original black stained oak wood frame. An outstanding example of this famous Maine artist. SIZE: 22″ x 34″. PROVENANCE: From a fine Searsport, Maine home.
