DEREK GEORGE MONTAGUE GARDNER (British, 1914-2007) “50 SOUTH ICE TO PORT”. Oil on canvas nautical scene shows a three-mast tall ship sailing slightly toward viewer from left to right. Wonderful coloration in the sea with white caped blueish/green to dark blue. The ship is passing an iceberg. All under a cloud sky with a lightened area having peach to yellow coloring. Signed lower right. Housed in an outstanding gesso decorated gilt wood frame. The painting shows the “Berwickshire” under shortened sail heading westward to round the horn. This ship was a small iron barque built by Russell & Co. on the Clyde in 1860 for Larrs Shore Line and lasted until 1923 when she was broken up at Genoa. A wonderful work with great detail and understanding by this artist. SIZE: 20″ x 30″. CONDITION: Very good, some craquelure around the stretcher line. 9-97619 (17,500-22,500)
