ANTONIO NICOLO GASPARO JACOBSEN (American, 1850-1921) PORTRAIT OF THE THREE-MAST SHIP “S.P. HITCHCOCK”. Oil on board scene shows the black hulled ship with three small sails up sailing right to left in rough dark seas. There are twelve men on deck and the ships name is emblazoned on the bow. Signed lower right “Antonio Jacobsen 1905”. Attached to back is a variety of information regarding the Hitchcock. It was built in Bath, Maine by I. F. Chapman & Co. and owned by the same having New York as the home port. It is listed on page 262-263 of the Antonio Jacobsen Checklist. The Hitchcock was one of 12 ships wrecked in Hong Kong harbor September 18th, 1906. Housed in a gold and black painted wood frame. SIZE: 22” x 36”. PROVENANCE: Ex-Richard Paine Estate, Seal Cove, Maine. CONDITION: Left edge with paint chip, needs cleaning. Otherwise very good. 9-23190 (10,000-14,000)
