ARCADE “CHECKER” CAB. There were two versions of this particular toy. This example and the other version that was embossed “Checker Cab” above the windshield. A classic and exceedingly rare 1930s automotive toy manufactured by Arcade. Arcade seemed to produce a bevy of automotive toys from the golden era of automotive toys. Looking at the vehicle head on, is a large nickel plated grill with rectangular shaped head lamps and large sweeping wheel wells, giving it a very streamlined and modernistic look and appeal. Large front and rear bumpers, rubber tires covering iron discs, with a spare mounted to the rear frame, but contained within the rear bumper. Another interesting aspect of the design is the use of “suicide” style front doors. For many years, this was virtually a nonexistent toy. When the first one surfaced at auction, it sold for over $60,000! Subsequently, as is typical, a handful have come to market, and hence prices have become much more reasonable. It is intriguing to look at the vehicle, and yet, sweeping, streamlined, and boxy, are some of the words to describe this toy. Toy previously was part of Donald Kaufman’s personal collection and retains sale tag with #1120. SIZE: 8-3/4″ l. CONDITION: Overall very fine plus. Paint appears to be original. Black light inspection reveals repair to front and rear bumper as well as the left rear wheel well. 1-12846 (4,000-6,000)
