OUTSTANDING 19TH CENTURY ZINC STATUE OF AN INDIAN WARRIOR. Life size statue shows the Brave standing with bare feet on a rock and stump plinth. He holds an arrow in his right hand and a bow in his left. He looks to his left with long flowing hair and wears traditional garb. The rock by his left foot is inscribed “Robert Wood & Co. Makers Phila.”. The figure has a later green paint to resemble a green verdigris patina. REFERENCE: “America’s Indian Statues” by Marion E. Gridley, Page 24 and page 89 show identical figures, one having the addition of a flat front feather headdress and indicating that there are several found that are identical at Akron, Cincinnati and Lodi, OH; at the Old Fort in Schenectady, NY; Calhoun, GA; Ishpeming, MI and Portage Park, Barberton, OH. Also, an identical example but with a polychrome finish was advertised on page 44 in the Antiques Magazine, July 1975 by Florentine Craftsman. The book, the Antiques magazine and the article accompany the statue. Our consignor purchased this piece from the owner of the “Smithfield Mansion” where it was a centerpiece of a boxwood garden on his Estate. Heziah Smith, founder of Smithfield Village, which was home of the Smithfield Iron Foundry, located near Mt. Holly, NJ. SIZE: 73″ h x 29″ at widest x 26″ at deepest. PROVENANCE: Collection of Elwyn Dearborn, Medford, NJ; Portland, ME. CONDITION: Very good with repaint and minor repairs. 9-95999 (15,000-25,000)
