YELLOW KID McFADDEN’S ROW OF FLATS” JIGSAW PUZZLE. Rare example of this McLoughlin Bros. puzzle which includes the original box. Box cover art depicts the Yellow Kid standing against a wooden fence with comical antics of New York City’s “McFadden’s Row” dwellers transpiring above him. The puzzle illustration itself is one of the most outrageous, if not the largest, in the Yellow Kid cartoon series ever created by artist R.F. Outcault. It features a comically savage game of street football among the McFadden’s Row urchins, beneath a derelict makeshift goalpost. Outcault adds to the whirlwind calamity by including in the background four Ivy League College cheerleaders with team pennants, a fellow on the sidelines dispensing “Arnica–10 cents a dipper full” (an herbal remedy of the time used to treat sprains, aches, and wounds), and a stagecoach labeled “Walter Camp Coach”, who was revered at the time to be the father figure of organized football. The box cover and puzzle are both marked at the bottom “The Yellow Kid–Copyright 1896 by R.F. Outcault”. SIZE: Puzzle 18-1/4″ w. x 25″ l. CONDITION: Puzzle grades very good to excellent with bright colors and clean surfaces; missing one square piece of the sky, which could be professionally replicated. Box cover illustration in generally good condition with moderate scuffs, scratches, and soiling; several sides to the cover are missing. 1-9481 (1,000-2,000)
