AMERICAN VICTORIAN CHERRY S-ROLLTOP DESK. Last quarter 19th century. This fine raised-panel example in two parts. The upper case fitted with S-form slat roll with central leaf-carved hand grip, opening to an interior fitted with an arrangement of pigeonholes and compartments and with two pencil drawers and two document drawers, set back and above a tooled leather writing surface with embossed gilt border. The lower case of two banks of four drawers centering a frontal divider with shaped returns and a solid modesty board, each bank headed by pull-out writing slide with tooled leather insert, all with leaf-carved handles, the lowermost of nut and leaf design, on molded plinths. Desk is designed with an automatic locking device controlled by the action of the rolltop, such that the drawers lock when the roll is pulled shut and unlock when the roll is fully open. SIZE: 49-1/2″ h. x 54″ w. x 34″ d. CONDITION: Professionally restored and repolished, now a medium reddish-brown. Canvas backing to roll somewhat dry. Lock and lockplate on roll and writing surface absent. Otherwise very good. 9-99276 (800-1,200)
