PAIR OF BLACK CLOTH DOLLS. This pair of rare and unusual dolls are pictured in the well-known book Collecting Black Americana by Dawn E. Reno. 1) Larger doll is 21″ (53cm) girl with black sateen face and covered body with fine embroidered features, individually stitched ears and black caracal hair. She is dressed in a 1910 period cotton gauze two-piece undergarment with a two-piece dress with a white cotton blouse and blue and white striped linen skirt covered by an off-the-shoulder printed cotton pleated dress of the same era. The stockings are pale blue and white striped ribbed cotton. 2) Smaller boy is 19-1/2″ (49cm) is dressed in a checkered hat, paisley jacket, red and white striped pants and paisley shoes. His facial features are all hand stitched but of a more coarse heavier stitching than the girls. Wig and eyebrows are made of a thick black wool yarn. The fingers are individually stitched with red thread and the wrists are sewn to show an indentation. CONDITION: Both very good; some deterioration to cloth on boy’s pants, several tiny moth holes in boy’s face. 1-11812 (1,000-2,000)
