FINE PAIR OF CHINESE IVORY POLYCHROME DECORATED TABLE SCREENS. Late Qing or early Republic period China. each three-dimensional carved of ivory depicting two interior rooms beneath a tiled roof overhung with a conifer. The first example shows a young lady in front of a large bed an elder in attendance being shown various furnishings for her approval including porcelains, embroideries, and jade figure. Within the interior of the bed, is a low table and trunks on which is perched a crane. The second screen depicting the right side of the dwelling; the interior scene with female figures serving food while a single figure observes. Also seen within this room is a stack of round lunch boxes and several tables and stools. Each hardwood screen of Hongmu or Huang Huali mounted in a stand of similar wood carved overall with dense scrolling vinery. SIZE: Frames: 22-1/2″ h x 15″ w. Overall: 29-1/2″ h x 17-1/4″ l x 10-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: Ex-Collection of John Reilly Jr (1876-1931), a member of the American Oriental Society (1918); American Numismatic Society member. Items acquired in his travels to Japan & China, 1909-1925. CONDITION: Both in very good condition with untouched surfaces. Colors remain rich and clear. Some deterioration to background lacquer or paper within the frame primarily at the seams. Wood frames and stands very good. 9-24847 (12,000-18,000)
