PAIR OF LARGE HUBLEY “PANAMA” DIGGERS. The largest of the diggers produced by Hubley, this particular lot features the normally found digger with green chassis and red back end, but also the more unusual and short production run of the gray front end with red back end. This somewhat massive toy, the truck features 8 rear tires, which in this case are rubber with wooden hubs (some deterioration to tires). These vehicles were so lifelike and typical of what one would find at a construction site. More than likely the name was associated with the Panama Canal, which began construction in 1881 and completed in 1914. Literally, the digger was actually powered by steam, which allowed the nickel plated digging arm to operate. Truly a wonderful and unique toy that emulated the real workhorse vehicle of the time period. SIZE: 13″ l. CONDITION: Overall good to very good. Red & green version lacking chain from bucket to vehicle frame. 1-12833 (1,000-2,000) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - June 2013 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. The prices noted here after the auction are considered unofficial and do not become official until after the 46th day. |
