OUTSTANDING FOLK ART CARVED AND DECORATED SPOON RACK. Circa 1800, probably Pennsylvania. This imaginative pine example carved overall with floral rondels amongst potted plants, trees and shrubs, interspersed with hearts and triangular geometric designs within borders and circles. The central motif, a carved church-like building surmounted by a large cross within which is a rectangular carved panel with the initials “K V D” over “D X Y” . The church flanked by smaller towers each with three crosses alternating with hearts. The backboard mounted with three cutout racks for accommodating spoons. The center-most carved with the initials “N K H”. (Possibly the initials of the maker. One could surmise this to be a gift to a couple whose initials are carved within the church structure.) The whole polychrome decorated SIZE: 18″ h x 8-1/2″ w x 1-1/2″ d. CONDITION: Very good condition with original surfaces. Evidence of some old re-nailing on backboard. 9-21790 (6,000-12,000)
