HIGHLY CARVED PAIR OF FRENCH RENAISSANCE REVIVAL OAK BOOKCASE CABINETS. Last quarter 19th century. Each quartersawn cabinet in two parts, the foliate carved molded cornice and frieze above a pair of glass paneled doors centering a carved medieval knight standing on a corbel with sword and shield, the doors opening to an interior fitted with two adjustable shelves, the doors flanked by three-quarter engaged acanthus-carved colonnettes, the cabinet sides with fielded panels, stepped back and joined to the lower case having outset corners, the edges carved with guilloches above a scrolling foliate frieze fitted with a concealed drawer above a pair of cupboard doors with triangular and diamond floral carved panels opening to an interior with a single adjustable shelf, the doors flanked by fully carved male and female figures, raised on a multi-level molded foliate carved plinth, terminating in suppressed ball feet. SIZE: Each 7′ h. x 49″ w. x 20-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: From a large Boston, MA area Estate. CONDITION: Cabinets retain original fumed oak finish with rich dark patina. Most moldings are intact and in place. It may be that we discover minor losses as yet undetected. 9-99296 (3,000-5,000)
