EXCEPTIONAL, RARE PAINTED AND PAINT DECORATED TALL CASE CLOCK, RUFUS COLE PAINTER. 1820-1830. Mohawk Valley, New York. This vibrant, dramatically grain painted tall clock in multiple shades of reds and browns against a background of chrome yellow with chrome yellow striping simulating string inlays and with diamond and square geometric panels in black, decorated with stenciled gilt & bronze powdered floral and fruit sprays and with fruit filled urn. Within the shaped base apron is the painted signature of the artist R. COLE/PAINTER. The swan’s neck pediment centering egg-form finials, the bonnet with astragal glass panel flanked by free standing colonnettes. The original painted arched dial with floral filled urn and gilt scrolling spandrels centering a Roman numeral chapter ring centering the maker’s name “R. WHITING WINCHESTER” above simulated painted and gilt apertures beneath a sweep seconds hand, paint-decorated with fruit. With original Whiting wooden works. The cased throat with cove-molded cornice above a rectangular molded door joined above a box with shaped apron. Please note: Rufus Cole worked in partnership with his father, Abraham, in the Mohawk Valley of New York at Broadalbin, just west of Albany, combining their talents producing notable tall cases during the 1820s and the early 1830s. Abraham Cole is listed in the Grantor Records of Montgomery County, 1835 as carpenter and co-owner of a sawmill with son Rufus listed as a painter. They incorporated a variety of 30 hour wooden works made by prominent workers of the period. This example with wooden works by Whiting as previously noted. All bonnets and cases are similar in design with the exception of the finial shape. SIZE: 82″ h x 12-1/2″ w (throat) x 9-3/4″ d. CONDITION: The case with original paint, professionally cleaned of excess over-varnish, to original surfaces. The broken arch crest with repairs to top of arches. The egg-shaped finials are replacements designed and decorated in the proper manor. Movement is original to case and is offered with pendulum, weights, and bob, in working order. Very good overall. 9-22081 (5,000-15,000)
