ALTHOF BERGMANN “COLUMBIA” FERRY BOAT. Rarely found, this exceptional form for an American tin boat is in overall very good original condition. Produced in the 1880s for a number of years with cast iron wheels simulating the paddle wheels of the real boat, a working walking beam and dual pilot houses with American flags on top of the cabin area (replaced flags). Bulbous is shape and with a plethora of colors, pinstriping and applied decals, this is a highly sought after toy for collectors of early American tin as well as collectors of toy boats. This style boat, although the form changed, is still used today. Passengers or vehicles would enter on one end and proceed through the cabin area and line up. Upon arrival at their destination they would then depart the ferry from the opposite end. A wonderful toy and a rare opportunity to buy a prime example of a cherished American tin toy.
