“FRUITS & VEGETABLES” HORSE DRAWN TOY BY ALTHOF BERGMANN. An amazing and exceedingly scarce American tin toy, one of two known surviving examples. The uniqueness of the form of the wagon to the best of our knowledge has only been used on this toy. The seat is affixed to the right and left side and can easily be pulled out of its supports. An unusual canopy covers the driver and his feet rest upon the raised interior of the wagon with a small inset opening to the middle of the front section. The two horses are attached to a wheeled platform and connected to a drop step in front of the wagon. Stenciled on the side of the wagon in gold is “FRUITS & VEGETABLES”. Perhaps this is the same wagon from a Michigan estate that sold at a Ted Mauer auction in the early 1980s for around $4,500-5,000? SIZE: 17-1/2″ l. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of Malcolm Deisenroth, Jr. CONDITION: Appears to be in untouched all original condition. Overall paint to wagon is very good to fine (right seat support devoid of paint). Brown horses retain butterscotch trappings, but paint is fair to good, but not overly distracting since trappings and tin have darkened with age. Aged repair to wheel supports/undercarriage springs. Wire on left horse has aged solder reattachment. 1-10171 (6,000-9,000)
