ALTHOF BERGMANN ELEPHANT TRAINER BELL TOY. This particular form was also used with a lion & trainer, dog & trainer and four maypole dancers. Extremely whimsical by nature, this toy when pulled along the floor the elephant being suspended on a scissor type platform moves forward and backwards while ringing the bells, all the while his trainer standing at the rear corner. The elephant with a red blanket trimmed in yellow holding a rod with two small bells in his trunk and the trainer with long prodding stick in hand. For a similar example refer to page 107 in Barenholtz’s American Antique Toys. SIZE: 11-1/2″ l. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of Malcolm Deisenroth, Jr. CONDITION: Restoration to paint.
