BERGMANN PATRIOTIC BELL TOY. This toy is part of a patriotic bell toy series that Bergmann manufactured. Large off-center heart wheels on the front and smaller heart-shaped wheels on rear. When toy is pulled along the floor, the platform would rise and fall causing the bell to ring. The over sized center figure is holding the bell pole, and directly behind him are a pair of horses and riders holding flags. Similar example found in the Barenholtz book, page 63. As we discussed earlier, there is much confusion or question as to who the true manufacturers of some of these toys. In particular, there is a question regarding this toy. Was it Althof Bergmann? Was it Gong Bell? Or perhaps Althof Bergmann was a jobber or distributor?? Regardless of the answer, this is an amazing and exceedingly rare as well as highly sought after toy. An unusual feature of this toy is the factory over-paint on the large standing figure. Oftentimes, pieces and parts were painted, and sometimes when placed on a toy the color was changed to fit that toy or to fit the look of that particular toy. It appears that originally this figure was red with mojave pants, and they altered the coloring to solid blue. Another interesting point is that the large center figure is stamped brass as opposed to tin, I suppose whatever material was handy that day. Tin or brass? SIZE: 9″ long. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of Malcolm Deisenroth, Jr. CONDITION: Right horse repainted. Left horse has some repair paint enhancement to leg area, replacement flags in rider’s hands. Possible repaint to green base. 1-10199 (5,000-10,000) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Spring 2010 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
