MASSACHUSETTS REVERSE SERPENTINE MAPLE & MAHOGANY SLANT-LID DESK. Second half 19th century, probably Boston. Rectangular dovetailed case with hinged sloping lid opening to an interior fitted with an arrangement of locked drawers and valanced pigeonholes. Central shell carved prospect door flanked by molded document drawers, further flanked by valanced cubbies over blocked drawers, further flanked by a bank of shell carved short drawers. Case of four graduated reverse serpentine long drawers on a conforming molded base raised on short cabriole legs terminating in bold talon and ball feet, all with scalloped returns. SIZE: 44″ h x 41″ w of case x 23″ d overall. PROVENANCE: From an Ellsworth, Maine Estate. CONDITION: Professionally restored and refinished. Brass hardware replaced appropriately. Wooden knob has been added to the lid. Otherwise very good. 9-21927 (2,000-4,000)
