STEVENS & BROWN CLOCKWORK MACHINE SHOP. To the best of our knowledge this mechanical workshop is an oddity in American tin toys, generally speaking machine shop toys were mostly foreign made. This toy must have been a failure in the marketplace mainly because it used too many parts, including a very small clockwork, that the toy required a lot of hand assembly and probably too much time was required. The stenciled imitation brick chimney is removable and is part of the boiler house that in real life would have powered the workshop by steam. There is an opening door on the boiler and the top of the boiler utilizes the same stampings found on the George Brown “Excelsior Locomotive”. Another feature is the trim on the top of the stack and fence work that is typical of George Brown toys and wagons. When the clockwork is wound the large cast iron fly wheel turns causing the excentric wheel drive the steam cylinder to go in and out then the governor mechanism turns and the shaft continues to operate the two trip hammers where a worker appears to be forging steel. SIZE: 8-1/2″ w x 8-1/2″ l. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of Malcolm Deisenroth, Jr. CONDITION: Paint enhancement to the base and red fly wheel. Toy is complete and in working order. 1-10026 (10,000-20,000)
