GEORGE BROWN MECHANICAL HOOP TOY WITH MALE CHILD. Pictured on plate 7 of The George Brown Sketchbook and also pictured in Blair Whitton’s American Clockwork Toys. As hula hoops were to children in the late 1950s/early 1960s, a wooden hoop with stick was to children in the 1870s/1880s. George Brown took this one step further creating a clockwork toy of a young boy carrying a flag, riding a hoop. This toy also came in a more deluxe version with the Goodwin Carriage Lady pushing the hoop and the third version of a large cloth covered child sitting on top of the clockwork housing. This toy, due to the size of the hoops, would circle about the floor and most likely amuse a child for hours. Toy’s mechanical housing is in a deep japanned blue with fine gold stenciling including a patent date of “1872”. SIZE: 9-1/2″ h to top of boy’s head. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of Malcolm Deisenroth, Jr. CONDITION: Overall very fine plus. Boy reattached at foot to clockwork housing. Some minor repairs to hoop/spokes of hoop. Clockwork mechanism is functional and could benefit from moderate lubrication. 1-10202 (15,000-25,000)
