ALPHABET MAN/YANKEE SCHOOLMASTER. Exceptional casting and design, this unique educational toy is sought after by not only toy collectors but collectors of folk art as well. An elaborate internal mechanism is activated by a lever on this gentleman’s right side. Depressing the lever causes the gentleman to blink his eyes and the circular alphabet to alternate to the next letter. There has been an abundance of speculation as to manufacturer original intent and the position of this gentleman’s right hand behind his back. Just as interesting is the exaggerated proportions/distortions of this fellow’s body, but a clever way to disguise the wheel of the alphabet on the inside. Incredible castings with great attention to detail most noticeable hair texture and facial expression all further enhanced by the polychromed paint of colors used. Only a handful of these are known to exist today. Malcolm was thrilled when he acquired this toy from Norman Perry and it was one of his favorite toys. SIZE: 10-1/2″ tall.
