JOHN JAMES AUDUBON (American, 1785-1851) TWO WORKS: “MALLARD DUCK” & “CANVAS-BACKED DUCK”. 1) Bien Edition, No. 2-1, Plate 385. Below image on bottom left “Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon, F.R.S. F.L.S.” Bottom right “Chromolithograph by J. Bien, NY, 1860”. Titled at center bottom. The scene shows two male and two female Mallard ducks in a marshy area. 2) Bien Edition; No. 15-1, Plate 395. Below image on bottom left “Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon, F.R.S. F.L.S.”. Title at center below image and no writing on bottom right where normally the Bien Edition is noted. The scene shows two male and one female canvas-backed ducks at shoreline edge with a view of the City of Baltimore in the background. Housed in an oak wood frame with matte. Along with a signed copy of “Pioneer Decoy Carvers” by Berkley. SIZE: 1) Total with margins: 26-1/2″ h x 39-1/2″ w. Image: 23-1/2″ x 36-1/2″. 2) Total with margin: 26″ x 38-14″. Image: 23-1/2″ x 36″. PROVENANCE: According to our consignor, these originally were in the collection of Ward Bros., acquired by our consignor’s father, Harry Chesley, Jr. (1909-1991), famous decoy carvers from Crisfield, MD. Harry married Dorothy Todd in 1937. Dorothy was the daughter of Captain Ira Todd of Crisfield, MD. Through the Todds, Mr. Chesley met & became friends with Lem & Steve Ward. Harry Chesley, Jr. was a sales manager for Swift & Company and national sales manager for Pabst Brewing Company. During WWII he was a lieutenant Colonel and Executive to the Commanding General of the Air Force Pacific Ocean area. After the war, Mr. Chesley spent many years as the Executive Vice President of marketing & advertising at the Phillip Morris, Co. CONDITION: 1) Laid down on light cardboard, all over tone, some insect damage with small holes, margin with losses and tears, in need of restoration. 2) The print has been glued to light board, all over toning, water stains and foxing lines, tear at center, losses and tears to margin.
