CLOCKWORK OMNI BUS ATTRIBUTED TO IVES BLAKESLEE. An outstanding and exceptional omnibus manufactured by Ives Blakeslee in the latter part of the 19th Century. To date, this is the only know example that has surfaced! Typical of Ives, they employed a small decal on the side of the carriage as they often did on the wooden bases of their clockwork toys. The front end is articulated and has the ability to go either straight or to the left only. The carriage itself is a Bombay-esque style and incorporates three various window cutouts and an opening real door with stenciled features. Unlike other clockwork toys, mechanism is partially exposed under the carriage and partially contained within the carriage. Also typical of Ives, it is of great and substantial quality and quite similar in nature to George Brown omnibuses. Part of the uniqueness of this particular omnibus is the variety of colors used on the sides with fine pinstriping separating the various colors. The roof itself, painted in yellow with black pinstriping in a fine elaborate design stenciled on the center of the roof. The back door is somewhat oversized with stenciled windows. The rear step is most likely a piece of scrap tin cut from a window of another Ives toy, once again demonstrating how these various companies utilized all parts and pieces. Eccentric front wheel assembly with alternating pins gives the effect of horses galloping. A great toy and a unique opportunity for a collector of early American tin. SIZE: 15″. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of Malcolm Deisenroth, Jr. CONDITION: Overall, this toy appears to be in all original paint condition. Aged repairs to yoke wheel support and yoke pivot assembly under front of the carriage. Japanned horses show age and oxidation. 1-10112 (25,000-50,000) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Spring 2010 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
