UNSIGNED (Mid 19th Century) PORTRAIT OF TWO SISTERS. Oil on canvas large portrait depicting two young girls in landscape. The older girl in white dress with blue shoes, blue waist ribbon and hair ribbons. Her hair is parted in the middle with curls cascading the sides. She holds a branch with red berries in her lap. Her younger sister is seated above her with one hand on her shoulder. She wears a rose colored dress with rose colored shoes and has long curly brown hair. Below them is a basket with fruit, a teacup and saucer and a doll figurine with dog beside. On the left side is a small red flower garden with green grass and the background is a sunset sky with cliff on the right. Over the girls shoulder is what appears to be a faint outline of a ship on the horizon. Housed in a period gilt molded wood frame. Back of the canvas pencil inscribed “Fallon 22″. SIZE: 32-3/4″ x 44”. PROVENANCE: Family history has indicated that this portrait was thought to have come from the Philadelphia side of the family. Estate of Dr. Lee W. Richards Jr. of Augusta, Maine. Obstetrician & Augusta’s first specialist. CONDITION: Relined with some chips and flaking on the right side, visible horizontal crease in center, craquelure.
