THE BERGMANN (BARNEY BARENHOLTZ) CLOCKWORK FIRE PUMPER. This iconic early American tin toy may not be the rarest of all, but it is, without question, the most famous of all early American tin toys; due in part to its dramatic, large presence on the frontice of the famous “bible” of American tin toys. Published in the 1980s, and authored by renowned and beloved dean of early American tin toys, the late Barney Barenholtz. The toy obviously was one of Barney’s favorites as it was selected to be featured in larger-than-life size on the fly cover of his book. The piece is not only featured on the front, but also well illustrated in the interior. Malcolm also much admired this piece and realized its iconic import. He as most proud to have acquired and been the next collector to own this cherished piece and he has to this day considered it one of the feature items in his collection. Few of these toys have ever surfaced. This toy is also illustrated in the Althoff Bergmann 1874 catalog. The clockwork mechanism is contained within the pumper body which not only activates the rear wheels, but a somewhat intricate bell ringing mechanism is activated as the toy rushes off across the floor. Typical of Bergmann toys, the driver sits within a “V” shaped seat and lifts completely off the toy for additional play value. Upon close examination, one can also see that these early toy companies employed the variety of tin parts used on many toys such as the tin saddles that were used as sides on the rear platform, the front cylinder ends used on the trains and the signature Bergmann floret stack top. SIZE: 15-1/2″ l. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of Malcolm Deisenroth, Jr. This toy is not only pictured in Barenholtz’s book, but is also featured in the Mint & Boxed hardcover catalog (inventory label attached to bottom of toy) and Alexander Galleries “Christmas Wish List” book. CONDITION: Overall good plus, some minor oxidation/corrosion to left horse where center bar has been resoldered to horse. Wire yokes have old amateur reattachment to wheel frame. Steam dome is a possible replacement. Toy is as pictured in the Barenholtz book. 1-10105 (27,500-47,500) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Spring 2010 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
