OVERSIZE CAST IRON DOGCART BY IVES BLAKESLEE. The Ives toy firm manufactured three different oversized toys utilizing the “walking” horse, this example, the dogcart, as well as the hansom cab and the sleigh. A massive and extremely intricate toy that has a great presence. These toys are particularly susceptible to damage due to their size, the frailty of the castings, and the multiple pieces involved. These toys are the largest of any pleasure vehicles manufactured by any cast iron toy maker. Believed to be fewer than ten surviving dog carts in collectors’ hands today. The iron horse is simply amazing. The concept being, the child would pull the horse along and his jointed legs would simulate the motion of a walking horse. The detailing in the casting including the horse collar, belly band, trappings, and blinders is amazing. The carriage, with two lanterns, faux wicker banding, four steps, and simulated tufted upholstery seat further enhance the appeal of this toy. SIZE: 18″ l. PROVENANCE: Collection of Malcolm Deisenroth, Jr. Formerly in the collection of Norman Perry of Plymouth, NH. CONDITION: The carriage itself appears to have no damage other than a small pie wedge section missing from tufted seat. Possible repairs to horse’s legs? and some re-japanning to the horse. 1-10181 (7,500-12,500)
