SPECTACULAR LARGE ALTHOF BERGMANN HOSE REEL WITH TWO FIREMEN. To the best of our knowledge a toy of this magnitude has never been available in a public arena. It is a rare and unique opportunity to buy such an important item of Americana such as this toy. Where to start with the appeal of this toy, the American shields, the lions holding the suspended hose reel, the lantern, or perhaps the two firemen pulling the toy along? To the purist who says, “I want nothing with any repairs,” sometimes you must make an exception, especially when the repairs are minimal and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the toy. The toy maker’s art, using the sinewy line of the wires holding the shields on the sides and the S-curved wire holding the lantern are just some of the elements that transcend the beauty of the toy. One cannot dismiss the design elements imagined by this toy maker’s art. Further enhancing the toy are the two firemen pulling the rig which was typical of actual hose reels of the day. The fireman drawn reels are truly unique in American tin toys. This is no exception. The patriotic nature of the shields and use of red, white and blue colors along with the fancy lantern and lions lends itself to make this fire apparatus seem like it was a parade vehicle. As in real life, the fireman’s equipment was very ornate, embellished and displayed with pride possibly explaining why these reels were so fanciful. SIZE: 12″ l. PROVENANCE: Both this toy and the previous lot were in the collection of Louis Hertz for many years. In the mid-late 1980s Lloyd Ralston was able to obtain many items from Louis Hertz including these toys. Eventually they found their way to Malcolm Deisenroth, Jr. and resided in his collection for years. CONDITION: Overall very fine plus with minimal inpainting to firemen, paint enhancement/restoration to lantern and shields. Upon inspection with a black light a couple of wire shield supports have been reattached to end tubes. Possible enhancement to lions’ manes. 1-10198 (25,000-75,000) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Spring 2010 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
