INCREDIBLE LION HOSE REEL BY ALTHOF BERGMANN. Oftentimes toy manufacturers employed a whimsical nature in creation/duplication of a real object. Hose reels were used along with fire tubs for battling blazes. This toy is a creation of various parts and pieces which greatly adds to the appeal of the toy maker’s art. An amazing little treasure, the gold japanning is vibrant with little indication of oxidation to the surfaces. The whimsy of a lion on either side holding the suspended hose reel in place is somewhat absurd, yet this quality makes this toy extremely desirable. Suspended on a wire and tin frame on four wheels, when pulled along the carpet the bell would ring. This toy is truly fresh to the market and although it’s been in a few hands, effectively it has not been publicly offered for well in excess of 50+ years. The following lot is the companion piece to this toy. SIZE: 5-3/4″ l. PROVENANCE: Both this toy and the following lot were in the collection of Louis Hertz for many years. In the mid-late 1980s Lloyd Ralston was able to obtain many items from Louis Hertz including these toys. Eventually they found their way to Malcolm Deisenroth, Jr. and resided in his collection for years. CONDITION: This toy is in exceptional all original condition! Lions do have paint loss to their manes. Some flaking to dark blue paint on exterior of hose reel. 1-10196 (10,000-20,000)
