IMPORTANT NANTUCKET LIGHTSHIP LIDDED PICNIC BASKET. Mid 19th century. This fine unsigned oval woven example fitted with a pair of hinged lids and brass latches. Additionally fitted with a hickory bentwood swing handle joined to the basket with brass ears. On a mahogany bottom. Note: A similar example is illustrated on plate 30, pg. 75 in “Nantucket Lightship Baskets” by Katherine and Edgar Seeler. SIZE: 13-1/4″ h (overall); 8″ h (basket) x 16″ l x 11-3/4″ w. PROVENANCE: Connecticut family home which descended from Sarah Upson Goodrich (Mrs. Oliver R. Beckwith) who descended from the Rev. Charles Chauncey, President of Harvard College and Elder William Brewster. Sarah was a member of the Connecticut chapter of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. CONDITION: Very good overall with nice patina and original surfaces. 9-21860 (4,000-6,000)
