MARGARET BOURKE-WHITE (American, 1904-1971) GAZE OF AN OLD MAN. Vintage unmounted photograph, circa 1936, shows a close up of an old man with large white beard gazing off into the distance. The lens has captured him from below and the cloudy sky is the backdrop. The image has a black border. Back is unmarked. At this time Margaret was in Georgia with Erskine Caldwell gathering photographs for their book “You Have Seen Their Faces”. This family grouping in a slightly different pose was used as the front cover of this book. We have been unable to find another image of this photograph published. SIZE: 14″ x 11″. PROVENANCE: Erskine Caldwell’s wife (Mt. Vernon, Maine); to our consignor’s father through descent. CONDITION: Slight imperfections to edges, generally very good. 9-99880 (2,000-4,000)
