RARE AMERICAN TIN HOOP BELL TOY WITH FIGURE ATTRIBUTED TO STEVENS & BROWN. This toy is pictured on page 109 of Barney Barenholtz’s American Antique Toys (in photo, same toy, negative reversed). Stenciled on the hoop “Chime pat. Aug. 20 and 27, 1872,” and below it “May 18, 1874 Hoop and Boy patent applied for”. This large tin figure was used on many different toys. Hoop toys are as rare as hen’s teeth, especially ones with exterior figures. “When the boy was added a new patent application was necessary to protect the model.” This particular example is in remarkable original condition with only an aged repair at boy’s hand and hoop handle.
