BOOK: “DESCRIPTION DE L’EGYPTE”. Second edition, Paris, C.L.F. Panckoucke 1826. The large edition having engraved large plate (elephant folio) pages with the natural inhabitants of Egypt. Full title page reads: “Description de l’Egypte ou recueil des observations et des recherches qui ont ete faites en Egypte pendant l’Expedition de l’Armee francaise. Seconde edition. Dediee au Roi. Publiee par C.L.F. Panckoucke, Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur. Atlas geographique. Paris, Imprimerie de C.L.F. Panckoucke. MDCCCXXVI” (Description of Egypt, or the collection of observations and research which was made in Egypt during the expedition of the French Army). Each 27″ x 20″ page impressed mark with an embossed sphinx in a circle and engraver name. The plates each numbered, subjects include: Bats, animals, birds, reptiles including snakes, fish, mollusks, crustaceans, insects including spiders, sea life including coral, plant life, fossil and mineral deposits. The book is bound with partial Morocan red leather with an end binding in gold “Description De L’Egypte Historie Naturelle” with decorative red and black marble boards. Approximately 232 plates comprise this book. We are not sure how many volumes this encompasses but it is 1/4 of the large plates found in the complete edition. Most likely this is a copulation of volumes I and II. None are hand colored and there was suppose to be a colored frontispiece that is not present. The second edition usually consists of 37 volumes with 24 volumes bound in 26 books. 10 volumes of plates and 1 volume of maps. SIZE: Total: 28″ x 22″. CONDITION: Binding is damaged but intact, pages are very good with only some beginning and end pages with edge wear. 9-97406 (12,500-17,500)
