ALTHOF BERGMANN ELEPHANT BELL TOY. Often referred to as Althof Bergmann, there is a fine line between whether these actually were manufactured by Althof Bergmann or manufactured by Gong Bell. This particular example as well as numerous others presented in this catalog employ the trademark cast iron heart shaped wheels, aesthetically pleasing, a variety of animals with or without figures, excentric front wheels, mounted upon tin bases, and dome shaped bells with tribar with clappers. This appears to be a very fine, all original example of an Indian elephant with red painted blanket. During the time of manufacture one of the big events in any town was the circus arriving, oftentimes elephants and horse drawn chariots and bandwagons paraded down the main street. Typical of toys is the emulation of real life activities and a child would be thrilled to have a toy such as this to remind him of a circus’s arrival. SIZE: 9″ l.
