DOOR OF HOPE BRIDE & GROOM DOLLS. This pair as well as the following ten dolls have great provenance. These dolls were brought back from China in 1913 by Dr. M. Emily Garner, who was a missionary doctor in Shanghai from the 1890s to 1913. The dolls have been in the family ever since she returned from Shanghai. Most of the dolls have slips of paper identifying them, that were pinned under the clothes by Dr. Garner. Included with each doll is a copy of a 1900 newspaper article discussing woman doctors in Shanghai and a certificate dated Feb. 6, 1913 from the Bureau of Citizenship declaring Emily Garner to be an American citizen for her return passport application. Highly sought after early example of the bride and groom with each having mitt hands. The bride having a most elaborate as well as intricate outfit and finely carved appliques to the tightly woven bun on rear of her head. The groom having a long braided cue. An outstanding pair with great provenance! SIZE: 10″ & 12″ respectively. CONDITION: Overall very fine plus to near mint. 1-9613 (2,000-3,000)
