AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE MAPLE AND BIRCH SLANT-LID DESK. Late 18th, early 19th century, probably Connecticut River Valley. This transitional desk with dovetailed rectangular case fitted with a hinged sloping lid opening to an interior with an arrangement of valenced pigeon holes and drawers centering a fan carved prospect door opening to a compartment and two drawers concealing an additional valuables drawer. The case fitted with four graduated long drawers with thumbmolded edges, the uppermost drawer flanked by lopers, on a molded base raised on ogee bracket feet with scalloped returns. The whole with a mahoganized finish. SIZE: 40″ h x 34-1/2″ w of case x 20″ d. PROVENANCE: Connecticut family home which descended from Sarah Upson Goodrich (Mrs. Oliver R. Beckwith) who descended from the Rev. Charles Chauncey, President of Harvard College and Elder William Brewster. Sarah was a member of the Connecticut chapter of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. CONDITION: Very good overall with minor old professional restorations and with replaced hardware. Bracket feet are original. 9-21873 (2,000-3,000)
