RARE PROTOTYPE REMINGTON/BEALS CARTRIDGE SPUR TRIGGER SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER. Cal. 32 RF. NSN. Blued finish, smoothbore 4” oct bbl, missing front sight, spur trigger with typical Beals’ design gutta percha handmade bag grips in three pieces, two sides & the bottom. It has a drop down cyl pin with ball catch. There are no markings anywhere on revolver. The revolver appears to be a very well made, hand-machined, model shop type prototype, using Fordyce Beals basic design patterns. Because of certain Beals design features used, the consignor’s research dates the gun circa 1860-1862. This revolver was probably not marketed since it was a definite infringement on the Rollin White Patent owned by Smith & Wesson at that time. Smith & Wesson began winning their court infringement cases in 1862 and more than likely this kept Remington from producing this revolver. Accompanied by a copy of the Oct. 1991 Gun Report containing an article written by Mr. Huber, the consignor, about this revolver. In the article is a copy of an October 1860 price list which he believes refers to this revolver. The price list states “We have now in process of manufacture a new and superior CARTRIDGE LOADING REVOLVER which will be ready for market in the course of two or three months.” Revolver is pictured on p. 200 in The Guns of Remington, Madaus. CONDITION: Good to very good. Traces of orig blue in protected areas, mostly gray/brown patina mixed with light pitting & surface rust. About 80% of silver plating remains on triggerguard. Grips are fine, bore is poor, action is good. 4-59492 JH113 (3,000-5,000)
