IMPORTANT HISTORIC UNCLE SAM SUIT AND TOP HAT. Used by Thomas Nast for his model while with Harper’s Publishing Company in New York. Of all the 19th Century American Illustrator/Cartoon artists to create images of Uncle Sam, Thomas Nast is truly the most significant. He is recognized for having popularized the addition of the beard to the image of Uncle Sam and for having propagated the image of Uncle Sam through his cartoon illustrations for over 35 years during the last half of the 19th Century This suit and hat were used by Thomas Nast as artists props in the process of his creating countless Uncle Sam images during his professional career as an artist/cartoonist for Harper’s Magazine as well as numerous other periodicals of the 19th Century. This suit and top hat are truly a major part of a development of the historic images of Uncle Sam during a most important period of our country’s history. This is the only Uncle Sam suit known to exist that has a direct connection to the creation of Uncle Sam images by Thomas Nast. An extremely rare and truly museum quality piece of history. This Uncle Sam suit and top hat were stored in a properties storage room at Harper & Brothers Publishing Company in New York City in a wooden crate labeled “Thomas Nast – Uncle Sam’. The suit, top hat and wooden crate were removed from the storage room in 1896 by Joseph Wesley Harper, nicknamed “Joe Madison”, son of Charles Wesley Harper and grandson of Joseph Wesley Harper, one of the original four founding Harper brothers. They remained in his personal possession until 1932 when Cheston Kayser of Island Heights, New Jersey acquired them directly from him. They were then acquired directly from Cheston Kayser by Gerald E. Czulewicz, Sr. in 1974 and have remained in his collection until the present time. A notarized letter of authenticity and provenance from Mr. Czulewicz will accompany this lot. C. 1870. CONDITION: Generally good, some fraying and slight wear. 1-26881, 1-26830 (0-0)
