BELA LYON PRATT (American, 1867-1917). CARVED MARBLE BUST OF A BOSTON GENTLEMAN. Circa 1900. Depicting a gentleman with mustache, winged collar, tie, vest, and jacket. On a plinth with concave molded edge. Signed proper left side below shoulder “B.L. Pratt”. Bela Lyon Pratt, at age 16, began his study at Yale University School of Fine Arts under the tutelage of John Henry Niemeyer, John Ferguson Weir, and Augustus Saint-Gauden. After spending time in Saint-Gauden’s private studio, Pratt honed his skills in Paris with sculptors Henri-Michel-Antoine Chapu and Alexandre Falguiere at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, followed by a 25-year career as a teacher of modeling at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts. Famous works by Bela Pratt include: the gold Indian Head half ($5) and quarter ($2.50)eagles; the Genius of Navigation for the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago; sculptures for the Pan-American Exposition at Buffalo in 1901; the entrance sculptures to the Boston Public Library, Art and Science; entrance porch, Thomas Jefferson Building, Library of Congress; Dr. Henry Augustus Coit, St. Paul’s School, Concord, New Hampshire; Andersonville Boy, State Capitol Grounds, Hartford, Connecticut; Nathan Hale, Yale University; Whaleman’s Monument, New Bedford, Massachusetts; and Edward Everett Hale, Boston Public Garden, Boston, Massachusetts. SIZE: 26″ h. x 20-1/2″ w. PROVENANCE: From a Colorado Springs, Colorado, estate of a prominent fine arts collector. While Mr. Pratt’s works have rarely been offered to the public in bronze, this lot is Bela Pratt’s only known marble bust we have ever found offered for sale to the private sector. CONDITION: Bust with fine surfaces and color, with small flakes to tips of mustache and proper left side of collar. No repairs or other damages to bust noted.
