NEW ENGLAND COUNTRY CHIPPENDALE MAPLE SIDE CHAIR. Mid-18th century. Probably eastern Massachusetts or Rhode Island, this example with serpentine crest rail and upswept ears above a pierced vasiform splat, the chamfered stiles joined to the trapezoidal woven rush seat, the frontal legs swelled and cylindrical with sausage turning, on flattened pad feet. The rear legs backswept and notched, joined by a box stretcher, the frontal stretcher sausage-turned. SIZE: 39-3/4″ h. of back. PROVENANCE: From the Easton family estate, Paradise Farm, Middletown, R.I. By descent through the family to the current owner. CONDITION: Nice example retaining original surfaces, with good old patina and no visible restoration. 9-93288 (600-900)
