CONTINENTAL ROCOCO REVIVAL CARVED CORNER WHATNOT ETAGERE. Last quarter 19th century. Of phantasmagorical effect overall, the top shelf with two-sided pierced gallery depicting dragons with intertwined tails and supported by a stylized peacock, joined to the second graduated shelf supported by a carved screaming chimera with carved wings and scrolling tails, joined to the bottom graduated shelf with carved edge and frieze, supported by a fully-carved winged feminine creature with goat legs and cloven hoofs and presenting a gilt-decorated cartouche, raised on a stepped acanthus-carved triangular plinth. SIZE: 71″ h x 26-1/2″ w x 16″ d. CONDITION: This beautifully rendered corner whatnot with minor repairs and losses to wingtips, the whole painted over the original gilded and painted surfaces.
