SIGNED & UNSIGNED (American, 19th Century) TWO ANCESTRAL PORTRAITS. 1) Rectangular oil on canvas portrait of a woman wearing a black dress with white lace collar and large shell cameo. Housed in its original gilt molded wood frame having an inscription on reverse which appears to have the artist, sitter and location of Bath, Maine but most is obscured. Also written in pencil on stretcher and frame “Mrs. Jeannie Knox Butler Portland, ME. My own dear mother. Wife of Albert…, mother of Ella Knox Butler. Born 1832 Died 1872″. Probably one of the Knox family portraits. 2) Oval oil on canvas of an unidentified young girl wearing a white dress and looking straight on at viewer. Housed in its original gesso decorated gilt oval frame. SIZE: 1) 27″ x 22″. 2) 16″ x 13”. PROVENANCE: E. P. George Estate of Beacon Hill, Boston, MA & Thomaston, Maine. CONDITION: 1) Restored with inpainting. 2) Fair to good with some thin canvas showing. 9-93699 (400-700)
