SELECTION OF EARLY CONTINENTAL AND ENGLISH SMALL PAINTED BOXES. Mid-19th century. Including five lacquered and paint-decorated round lidded boxes; a lidded tole box of a hunting scene; a nice fitted ivory box, the lid painted with a classical harbor scene, the edges scrimshawed with floral sprays and swags; a French cylindrical tobacco box with Napoleanic portraits; together with two brass boxes with painted and enameled decoration of 20th century origins. (10) SIZE: Largest lacquered box: 3-3/4″ dia. Smallest round box: 2-1/2″ dia. Ivory box: 1″ h. x 4-3/4″ l. x 2-3/4″ d. PROVENANCE: From a fine coastal Maine private collection. CONDITION: The lacquered boxes with varying degrees of damage to lacquer, and craquelure. Good overall. The tole box with old craquelure and two areas of loss to paint, otherwise good. The ivory box with two small areas of paint loss and small chip inside at lock, otherwise very good. The tobacco box with minor acceptable losses on rim edge, retains original glass and portraits.
