EDWARD WILLIS REDFIELD (American, 1869-1865) NEW HOPE, PENNSYLVANIA CANAL. Wonderful oil on canvas colorful scene shows a canal with riverboat winding through tree lined banks, one bank having a dirt roadway. All under a blue and white cloud sky. Housed in a period carved wood arts & crafts style gilt frame having name plate “EW Redfield”. On reverse is attached a letter of authenticity from Dr. Tom Folk as follows: “To Whom it May Concern: (May 25, 2004) The painting of the canal, oil on canvas, 16 x 22 inches, inscribed “E.W. Redfield”, lower left, and dated 1907 in pencil on the stretcher, is an authentic work by Edward W. Redfield, and will be included in my forthcoming catalogue raisonne on the artist. Both the signature and the date are apocryphal. This painting should be dated circa 1898. I have seen several 1890’s Redfield paintings with apocryphal signatures and dates. The painting probably depicts the canal near New Hope, Pennsylvania. A canal boat with a shadowy figure is on the viewer’s center right, and there are two other shadowy figures walking further down the towpath (center left). The painting is painted with spring colors. The painting comes with a period frame, with name plate “E.W. Redfield”. Yours truly, Thomas C. Folk”. SIZE: 16” x 22”. CONDITION: Very good, cleaned with very minor speckle inpainting. 9-74349 FP (50,000-75,000)
