S.M. CHARLES (American, Mid 19th Century) PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN, POSSIBLE DR. RICHARD H. STUART. Oil on canvas half portrait of a young man wearing black coat and white shirt with dark background. Housed in its original gesso decorated gilt frame which is as is and has a “Veerhoff Galleries, Washington D.C.” label. Inscribed on reverse of canvas “Painted by S.M. Charles, 1837″. SIZE: 30″ x 25″. Overall: 37″ x 32”. PROVENANCE: Through the family of Dr. Richard H. Stuart. Stuart was the first physician approached by John Wilkes Booth following the assassination of President Lincoln. While a Confederate, Stuart refused to treat Booth. Dr. Mudd who did offer medical assistance to Booth was hung for treason. CONDITION: Craquelure with some frame abrasion, inpainting, discolored varnish. 7-70176 (400-600)
