RARE COMBINATION CIVIL WAR ERA PATENT CHECKERBOARD AND WRITING CASE. H.C. Small of East Lemington, Maine patented this wooden roll up checkerboard/writing desk, January 14, 1862 and it is so marked. This could have been a perfect companion for a soldier who played checkers and wrote letters home. Together with a group of old wooden checkers in a box. Appear to be similar vintage but did not come with this checkerboard. CONDITION: One small chip on checkerboard, scattered scratches. Some loss of red paint. Tarred linen backing is very good. One small 1” x ¼” is missing. Copies of orig patent drawings are included. 4-56213-15 (800-1,200)
