REMINGTON NEW MODEL ARMY CARTRIDGE CONVERSION REVOLVER. Cal. 46 RF. SN 137026. Nickel finish with 8” oct bbl with standard three line marking, pinched front sight, 2-pc walnut grips with “JWK” cartouche. The conversion number “2913” is stamped on the bottom of the bbl & left side of frame under grip. Back of cyl has various marks. This revolver is typical of the Smith & Wesson/Remington contract conversion of 1868-1870. It is one of over 4,500 leftover percussion military guns sent to Smith & Wesson for conversion by B. Kittredge Co. of Cincinnati, OH for conversion to cartridge. All the cylinders of this contract were stamped with the White patent date “PATENTED APRIL 3D 1855.” Smith & Wesson held the rights to the White Patent (bored through cylinder) until expiration in 1869. Revolver is an example of the blued contract type. Many or most revolvers were refinished at this time; this was one of the few nickled. The conversion was done for $3.3825 each with Smith & Wesson retaining $1.00 royalty. The orig contract revolvers were supplied without the patented ejector. (This was added to revolvers made after this contract was complete.) CONDITION: Retains much of the nickel plating applied at the time of conversion, with some flaking on bbl, & wear on triggerguard. Grips have been varnished over the light chips & dings. Bore is good with light pitting. Mechanically fine. 4-59326 JH45 (3,000-4,000)
