MOUNTAIN MAN BRONZE BY FREDERICK REMINGTON. Large size re-cast of the famous Remington bronze titled “Mountain Man” on a green marble base with molded edge. Statue is about 29-1/2″ high, including base and about 18″ from horse’s head to its tail by approx. 12″ wide. This famous bronze depicts a mountain man trapper dressed in fringed buckskins with fur hat wearing hunting pouch & powder horn with a sheathed knife on his belt and fringed moccasins on his feet astride his horse who is descending a very steep mountain grade. The horse is wearing a bridle and the saddle is covered in fur or buffalo robe and is a dbl cinched rig with bedroll & hatchet behind the cantle and several traps hanging from various positions along with a coiled lariat. The trapper has his full stock flintlock rifle across his knees & saddlebow. Side of the mountain base is marked “Copyright by / Frederick Remington”. Front of marble base is mounted with a bronze plaque titled “MOUNTAIN MAN / FREDERICK REMINGTON”. The foundry who owned the molds for Mr. Remington’s bronzes continued to cast them long after his death until the molds wore out. This one appears to be an early one as the details are strong & clear whereas the later ones showed wear to the mold. CONDITION: Very fine. Retains about all of its orig foundry patina. 4-40608 JR191 (500-1,500)
