PERRY FLINTLOCK SMALL SCALE FOLDING BAYONET BLUNDERBUSS. SN NSN. Cal. .585 bore diameter. .980 at muzzle. This diminutive, 23-3/4″ long overall with bayonet folded, blunderbuss, has 10-1/2″ brass cannon barrel engraved “London” at rear portion, and stamped with London gunmakers proofs. Top mounted, spring-loaded folding bayonet, has button catch, and is held in place by iron thumbpiece mounted on breech plug tang. Brass lockplate is engraved “Perry”. Lock has iron serpentine cock, unbridled frizzen, and friction spring. All furniture is of brass. Small trigger guard has acorn finial. Sideplate has stand of arms engraving, as does buttplate tang. There is a brass oval at top of grip, and beaded thimbles hold oak ramrod with horn tip and steel worm. Dark, lightly figured European walnut stock has deeply fluted comb with decorative carving around breech plug tang. PROVENANCE: Consignor states this unusual piece was in the John Amber collection. CONDITION: Very good. Brass shows old cleaning, and pleasing patina. Iron parts show considerable cleaned pitting. Stock retains old finish with numerous marks, and has a very pleasing appearance. Lock and frizzen are slightly soft. Bayonet release is gummed but movable. Blackmore lists a William Perry as a gunmaker in Birmingham, 1776-1788, who marked his guns “London”. 4-39911 MGM67 (2,500-3,500)
