AZEL CAPEN (American, Mid 19th century) TWO PORTRAITS OF WOMEN. 1) Unframed oil on canvas half portrait shows a black haired woman seated holding a book titled “Ladies Book 1840”. She is seen against a dark background. 2) Unframed oil on canvas half portrait of a woman in a black dress having a lace collar and lace bonnet with burgundy and white leaf decorated bonnet sash tied at her neck. On reverse of canvas is an artist’s stencil “Painted by A. Capen” also handwritten “Stoughton Septr 1839″. SIZE: 1) 26″ x 22″. 2) 27″ x 22”. PROVENANCE: Both portraits were on loan in 1984 at the University of Maine, Farmington. CONDITION: 1) Very good. 2) Some inpainted touch-up spots, some minor chips, otherwise very good. 9-26273, 9-26274 (1,000-1,500)
