I. WILKES CANNON BARREL BLUNDERBUSS WITH FOLDING BAYONET. SN NSN. Cal. .770 Bore diameter. 1.270 at muzzle. 13″ Swamped twist barrel has Birmingham proofs at rear, and multi-ring cannon muzzle. Spring-loaded top-mounted folding bayonet is retained by thumbpiece on iron breech plug. Lock with waterproof pan, bridled frizzen, and roller spring has serpentine cock, and rear sliding safety bolt, which engages at half cock. Rebated tail of lockplate has feather engraving, and there is some light floral engraving on remainder of lockplate. Brass trigger guard terminates in loop, which forms semi-pistol grip, has stylized pineapple finial, and stand of arms engraving on bow, and burst of leaves at end of guard. Brass buttplate with medium tang has matching engraving. Ebony ramrod with brass tip and steel tail with worm, covered by brass cap, is held by brass double beaded pipe and thimble. “I. Wilkes” is stamped in ramrod channel. Lightly figured, dense European walnut stock has flat top square checkering with mullered borders. There is a truncated silver crest plate at top of grip. Bbl attaches to fore-stock with two side nails. Nigel Brown in his book LONDON GUNMAKERS, lists a John Wilkes who established his business in Birmingham ca. 1830, and later moved to London, and is possibly the maker of this gun. CONDITION: Good. Bbl has most of an old re-brown, with good definition to pattern. Bayonet is cleaned to silver and shows some light pitting. Lockplate is also silver and somewhat pitted. Cock appears to be a well done replacement. Brass furniture has been polished, but has darkened to gold. Stock retains most of an old finish with numerous light marks and dings. Checkering shows some wear, and re-cutting. Lock and frizzen are crisp. 4-40625 MGM76 (3,500-4,500)
